The Challenge of Organizing Lego

If you have children who love Lego, you have probably been in the same position as I was in on how to find a way to organize all of those plastic blocks.

My Son has become addicted to Lego and I felt that those little blocks were overtaking our playroom. Everywhere I looked there were more blocks and more blocks. I needed to find a way to organize them before they took over our life.

I was doing some searching on the internet to find an inexpensive solution that would contain the blocks however also keep them easily accessible for my son to play with. At first I was thinking to just get a bunch of the plastic storage bins, but was not all that keen on the idea. Then I found this......

....and I fell in love.

This was exactly what we needed to tackle the Lego which was overtaking our playroom. Jen from i heart organizing had come up with this idea to tackle her own Lego organization.

For anyone that knows me, once  I have an idea in my head that needs to be accomplished, I won't rest until it is done. We went to Ikea to purchase the Trofast storage units and bins so that I could get the Lego under control yesterday while my son was at school.  I used 2 trofast units, and used my label maker to label the bins. This solution was perfect and when my son came home from school he was really excited that he could see all of his lego and that it was organized into bins by colour.

In Total this project cost us just under a hundred dollars which I think is pretty good. As well, if by chance my son stops playing with Lego, these storage units can easily be converted into storing other items or toys.


....now what else can I organize and label. Might have to go back to Ikea....

Happy New Year Everyone!

The past year has brought about some challenges that caused me not to be able to post on this blog the great deals and coupons that are available. I apologize to everyone.

For 2012 I have set a goal to spend more time blogging about the great Canadian Coupons, deals and offers that are available. I of course will also be adding some tips from how to save money to cooking meals on a budget.

I hope that the coming year will bring everyone much happiness and of course more money in our pockets!

5 Dollar Dinners One of my Favorite Websites

One of my Favorite sites to read is 5 Dollar Dinners. This site is fantastic because Erin, the creator is always posting about budget cooking for her family, how to save money at the grocery store and more

Some of her great budget ideas are:

• strategic couponing. Basically use coupons for items that you will need and use. This is not Extreme Couponing like many of you have seen on TV, but more so about using coupons as another way to save money without going crazy and clearing shelves at the store.
• Buying items on Sale.
• Cooking from Scratch
• Batch Cooking
• Dinner Planning
• Growing a vegetable garden to reduce your budget on veggies.

I read her website a few times a week and actually own her cookbook.

For the month of July, Erin and a few other bloggers have teamed up for a Freezer and Pantry Challenge. Basically try to make all of your meals from what you have on hand and only purchase perishable items. When I read this on her blog I decided that this was a great idea, especially since I need to make sure I have room in my freezer for all of the items that I will be harvesting from my garden.

So far I am well under my July Food Budget because of this challenge. While some of my meals will be more then $5 (how can you have Steak for under $5 for a family of 4), however I do ensure that when my favorite cut of steak is on sale, I stock up, vacuum seal and freeze the steaks. This way a steak dinner will still be under $10 for my family.

Get out your cookbooks everyone and look in your pantry and freezer. See what you can make this month from the items that you have on hand.

So far this month, here are some of the items that we have had....and I did not need to go to the grocery store for any of these meals.

Money Saving Tip: Freeze Lemons and Limes

Here is a great way to ensure you always have fresh lemon and lime juice on hand when you need it.

Sometimes you will have a recipe that only calls for the zest from a lemon or lime. Instead of just putting the lemon or lime in the fridge where you might forget about it and it will go bad before you use, why not freeze the lemon or lime.

The next time you see lemons or limes on sale or if you only used the zest, place the whole fruit in a freezer bag and place it in your freezer.

Then when you need fresh lemon or lime juice for a recipe, simply defrost the frozen lemons or limes in the microwave for a few seconds or submerge in cold water for about 15 minutes or so. The texture of the lemon or lime will likely be mushy once thawed, but the juice will still be perfectly fine for use in your favorite recipes. I find you actually will get more juice from the lemon or lime after it has been frozen.

Money Saving Tip: Menu Planning

"Mommy, what are we having for Dinner tonight?" 

You have just woken up and are dieing for that cup of coffee. As you enter the kitchen to make breakfast for the family and getting that ever needed cup of coffee, you hear those words coming from your sweet son. "Mommy, what are we having for Dinner tonight?"

Yes, that's right almost every morning my 4 year old son asks me what we are having dinner. Before he has eaten breakfast, before I have even woken up enough to remember what I have planned for dinner, he is already wanting to know what the 2 of us are going to make for dinner.

Ok, maybe not every household deals with this question as early as I do in the morning, but we all have to figure out at some point during the day what we are going to make for dinner. This can be the most challenging part of actually making dinner. You have to think about what everyone likes, what you have in the house, do you need to run out of the grocery store, what is our schedule today.....

To solve this problem, and to save a TON of money, you need to prepare a weekly meal plan. Every week, I go through the pantry and freezers and determine what we are going to have for dinner every night that week. This way I can plan my grocery shopping and ensure that I only have to make 1 trip to the grocery store that week.

We have all been in that situation where you decide to just run into the grocery store to pick up a mag of Milk and end up spending $10 because you pick up a few extra items. If you did this once a week for an entire year, you would be spending on average an extra $260 on stuff you really did not need.

If you have not heard of Sandi Richard, you might want to check out her website and her cookbooks. Her entire concept is to create a menu plan, and has cook books that have recipes already divided into weekly menu's and grocery lists. You can even print off a menu plan sheet to help you get started. I first saw her on the Food Network in her show Fixing Dinner.

This is our Menu Plan:

• Saturday - Tomato and Rice Soup with Cheese bread
• Sunday - Steak, Potatoes and Grilled Asparagus
• Monday - BBQ Chicken and Shrimp with Rice and Salad
• Tuesday - Pita Pizza's with Chicken and Goats Cheese (using left over chicken from Monday's Dinner) with Salad.
• Wednesday - Pork Tenderloin with Pasta and Green Beans
• Thursday - Breakfast, Eggs, Bacon, Toast, Hash Browns and Fresh Fruit
• Friday - Spaghetti , Garlic Bread and Salad.

Money Saving Tip: Fresh Breadcrumbs Made Easily At Home

If you have Kids, you more then likely have been asked one time or another to cut the crusts off the bread you are using to make them a sandwich.

Next time, Cut the crusts off the bread and put them in a freezer bag in your freezer (labeled of course). When you need some fresh breadcrumbs for that meatloaf you are making, just take that bag out of the freezer and process them through your food processor until they are perfect breadcrumbs.  Oh and no need to defrost the bread before you process it, I always just process it while it is still frozen and it works every time.

  

Money Saving Tip: Freeze Your Fresh Ginger

Have you ever purchased some fresh ginger for a recipe and end up not using all of it? Then when you go to use some more of your fresh ginger it has gone bad?

There is an easy way to avoid this from happening. When you purchase your fresh ginger, peel it and place in a freezer bag in your freezer (labeled of course). When you need some fresh ginger, just take it out of the freezer, and grate it while it is still frozen. Whatever you do not use up, just put it back in the freezer.

I love this tip, and have been doing this for well over a year and it works perfectly.

  

Money Saving Tip - Grow your own Vegetables.

Growing your own Vegetable Garden is one of the best ways to save a significant amount of money.

I enjoy gardening so ever year I plant a large vegetable garden. This year I have planted the following items:

• Herb Planter - Oregano, Basil, Flat Leaf Parsley, Rosemary, Thyme, Tarragon, Cilantro, Dill and Chives.
• Various Lettuce Plants
•  Strawberry Plants
•  Tomatoes
•  Pepper Plants
•  Garlic
•  Onions
•  Carrots
•  Beets - Golden and Red
•  Peas
•  Snow Peas
•  Beans
•  Zucchini
•  Butternut Squash
•  Eggplant
•  Cucumbers

As my vegetables grow throughout the summer I will harvest and eat what we can.What we can't eat right away I will process and freeze for us to consume over the winter. One of my current favourite things to freeze is Butternut Squash. My family really enjoys Butternut Squash Soup, or Ravioli. Buying Butternut Squash can be very expensive when it is not in season, therefore I grow my own (or stock up at the farmers market), peel and cut the squash into cubes, vacuum seal and then freeze. When we want a big pot of soup on a cold winters day, long after the garden is covered in a blanket of snow, I just run to my freezer and grab a bag of frozen squash at a fraction of the cost that buying a squash would be.

Herbs - Grow your own herbs and when the weather is getting colder, pick the herbs, wash, chop and freeze them, It's great to grab some fresh herbs to add to a stew or pasta sauce in the winter. You can also dry the herbs, but I prefer to freeze them instead.

Various vegetables - Peas and Beans are great to freeze. When they are ready to harvest, clean and blanch the veggies before vacuum sealing and freezing.

Money Saving Tip: Freezing Your Own Fresh Vegetables and Fruit

Freezing Your Own Fresh Vegetables and Fruit may seem like a lot of work, but trust me it can save you quite a bit of Money.

When you see Vegetables on sale at the grocery store for a fantastic price, be sure to buy extra and Freeze them. Or if you have a farmers market near you, be sure to stop by every week because you never know what kind of deal you will be able to find.

Every year I purchase a bushel of peppers, and lots of Butternut Squash and chop them up and freeze them. I do have a vacuum sealer, which makes sure that I do not have to worry about freezer burn. It is an investment to purchase a Vacuum sealer, but you will save money because none of the food you are freezing will get freezer burn. I received mine as a gift many years ago and it is still going strong. I would highly recommend the Food Saver, and you can reuse the bags as long as you have not stored meat in the bag.


Some of the Vegetables that I always buy, grow and Freeze:

• Peppers
• Butternut Squash
• Peas - blanch them first.
• Beans - blanch them first.
• Corn - blanch them first.
• Chopped Onion
• Beets - cleaned and chopped.
• Broccoli - blanch them first.
• Tomatoes - I dry them first in the oven, will show you that later this summer.

You can freeze Herbs as well, I just chop them up and put them in a freezer bag. When you need some fresh herbs, you can reach into your freezer. I find once they are frozen they are best used in cooked dishes, versus fresh, because they can slightly discolour from the freezing process.

Do you use Fresh Ginger but never seem to use it all up before it goes bad? Just peel the ginger, place it in a freezer bag and put it in your freezer. When you need some Ginger, just grate it while it is still frozen. This works Great.

For Fruit I freeze the following:

• Bananas - with the peel still on. They will turn brown and mushy, but they are still great in banana bread, muffins, bread pudding, or even smoothies.
• Strawberries - freeze them on a cookie sheet and then place them in a freezer bag.
• Raspberries  - freeze them on a cookie sheet and then place them in a freezer bag.
• Blueberries  - freeze them on a cookie sheet and then place them in a freezer bag.
• Peaches- - Peel, Chop them up and add a touch of Lemon Juice then freeze on a cookie sheet. Once they are Frozen place them in a freezer bag. Perfect for a Pie, Fruit Crisp.
• Plums - Peel, Chop them up and add a touch of Lemon Juice then freeze on a cookie sheet. Once they are Frozen place them in a freezer bag. Perfect for a Pie, Fruit Crisp.
• Apples - Peel, Chop them up and add a touch of Lemon Juice then freeze on a cookie sheet. Once they are Frozen place them in a freezer bag. Perfect for a Pie, Fruit Crisp.

Websaver.ca - How to order more coupons from Brand Portals

Did you know that Websaver.ca requires you to order a minimum of 3 coupons at one time? If you have just recently ordered coupons and don’t have enough to order the required 3 coupons again, try doing the following to see whether there are more coupons that you can order:

1. Order your coupon(s) on the main page or the current Brand Portal that you are on at websaver, click Get My Coupons.

2. Click on the “site map” link at the bottom of the page and you will see different “coupon portals” on the right hand side of the screen. You can order coupons from those pages as well and they will be added to your coupon total. Just keep adding the coupons that you want, and going back to the site map and look for other coupon portals to add more.

What does "One per Purchase" really mean?

Whether you have been couponing for years or have just begun, you are bound to run across a problem at some point trying to redeem your coupons.

I have foung that the most frequent is how to interpret the verbiage on coupons. I have decided to provide you with a few tips on what the coupon really means, however you need to keep in mind that every store will have their own coupon policy and the store may interpret the verbiage differently than what the manufacturer really meant.

The most famous problem is
"One Coupon per Purchase"  You will at some point or another run into a problem where the cashier at the store will say that this means you can only use 1 coupon. Well that is not what this means. One Coupon Per Purchase means 1 coupon per item purchased. You can purchase 4 items and each item is a purchase, and together they make a transaction. When this happens to me I will explain to the cashier that each item is a purchase and everything that I have is a transaction, and usually the cashier will understand and accept the coupons. To better explain this, if you are purchasing 4 cans of tuna, you can use 4 coupons as each can is a purchase.

"One Coupon Per Transaction" - This means you can only use one coupon within that transaction for that particluar item, however you can use other coupons for other items within your transaction. For instance, if you have 1 can of Tuna, 1 can of Tomatoes and 1 can of soup. If each coupon (and the coupons are all different) indicates 1 coupon per transaction, you can use all 3 of them, since each coupon is for the specific item. However if you have 2 of the same coupons that indicate One coupon per transaction and it is for tuna, and you want to use both within the same transaction, you can  not do that. You will need to complete 2 separate transactions.

"One Coupon Per Customer/Family/Person" -  This means that you can only use one coupon within that transaction, within that day. If you would like to use more than one coupon just come back later that day or on another day and use the coupon.

"The Picture does not match the item that you are purchasing" - If the coupon you are using indicates "ANY" item within a brand category, you can purchase any of those items, even if it is not in the picture. For instance, if you have a coupon for Kraft "Any Shedded Cheese 312grams" and the picture is for mozzeralla and you want to purchase cheddar. As long as the Cheddar Cheese is Kraft Brand, is shredded and is 312 grams, you are good to go. Manufacturers can not possibly put a picture of every item on a coupon or the coupon would have to be a a full piece of paper, therefore manufacturers will only put a small sampling of items in the picture or even just one item on the coupoon. Any means just that, you can use the coupon on any item within the specific criteria that the coupon details. You can not go and use this coupon on a bulk size block of cheese made by cracker barrel, but as long as it is Kraft, shredded and the specific size that is listed you are using the coupon correcly.

"Coupon value is more than the price of the item" -  If you are using a coupon for an item that is on sale for .88 and your coupon is for 1.00, you may or may not be able to use the coupon. Some stores will still allow you to use the coupon and will enter it as 1.00 therefore making it a money maker (you made .12 which can be applied to the remaining items in your transaction). Some stores will say that they will reduce the coupon to .88, and some will say that they can not accept the coupon. Either one of these is acceptable as it is up to the individual store or Company to determine how they will handle this type of situation. It is best for you to undertand the coupon policy for the store that you are purchasing your items. If at all possible, have a copy of that store coupon policy with you when you are checking out in case you run into any problems. A store does not have to accept your coupon, it is up to them to decided how and when they will accept coupons. A company should just have a standard coupon policy and ensure that every store and each cashier adheres to it. Bare in mind that not all stores will have a published coupon policy and some are franchised therefore individually owned and each store can have their own policy. In this instance it is just best to know the coupon policy for that store.

Is this coupon valid in Canada? Check the Redemption address to be sure.

With the show extreme couponing, I have noticed a lot of new couponers. While I will not comment on the show, I will confess I have watched it.

In your quest to find more coupons, you will probably come across a lot of sites that have coupons which are only valid in the US. I will not be publishing where to find these coupons as my focus is saving money in Canada and Canadian Coupons.

One way to easily tell whether the coupon that you have found is valid in Canada or not is to check the redemption address printed on the coupon where the retailer will need to mail the coupon to. If the redemption address is a US address (mainly you will have Texas), this is a US coupon and is NOT valid in Canada. Most Canadian Coupons will have a New Brunswick redemption address, however you will also find other addresses. As long as it is a Canadian Address you are good to go.

Start your Christmas Shopping early!

I know to some this may sound crazy, but if you have not started your Christmas shopping yet, I would suggest that you do.

At this time of the year, there always seems to be some great deals out there, as retailers are trying to get you in their stores shopping. To Take advantage of these savings, make a list of everyone that you will be buying for with some ideas of what you would like to buy for them. Keep this list handy so that when you are going through the weekly flyers, or maybe doing some shopping and find some great clearance deals, you know what you are looking for.

I have completed about 50% of my Christmas shopping already and plan to have the rest done in the next few weeks.

and If you get your Christmas shopping done early, then you will be able to enjoy the Holiday season instead of fighting the crowds.

Do you buy the seasoning packets from the grocery store?

I am sure most people buy the seasoning packets from the grocery store. I know I have! What most people do not know is that they are very expensive and are loaded with Sodium. If you are trying to save money, why not make your own.

For instance Taco Seasoning can be made at home for a fraction of the cost. I make a batch of this recipe and keep it in a plastic container in my cupboard. When I am making taco's I just grab a few tablespoons of this mixture, 1/4 cup of Ketchup and a 1/4 cup of water to a pound of ground beef. Taste delicious and saves money.

Taco Seasoning

• 1/2 cup dried minced onion
• 1/2 cup. chili powder
• 1/4 cup. salt
• 3 tbsp. pepper
• 1/2 cup.garlic powder
• 1/2 cup. ground cumin
• 
  

Why not Price Match!

Instead of driving to 4 stores to get the deals of the week, why not price match! You can check with your retailer to see whether they will match a price from another retailer. Walmart and Zellers Price match other retailers. The stores will not price match if an item is buy 1 get 1 free, but will price match if an item is advertised for a specific price. For instance this week you could Price Match the Royale Toilet Paper at No Frills at Walmart instead of driving to No frills. Most retailers will then also let you use a coupon on the Price Matched Item.

You will need the flyer from the retailer that you are price matching. You can ask at the customer service desk how they want to handle the price matching. Most just have the cashier override the item price to the sale price you are matching at, and they will more then likely keep the flyer.

Excuse me, May I have a rain check for that?

I think the title says it all. If you are doing your shopping and notice that one of the items that you are looking for is sold out, why not ask for a rain check! Most retailers are more then happy to provide a rain check for an item. We have consumer protection laws in Canada, where by retailers are to have enough stock on hand for a sale and unless it is indicated in the flyer that there will be limited quantities they are to provide a rain check. Again if it is unforseen factors that cause the retailer not to have enough in stock for a sale, then most will not provide a rain check, however in my opinion. retailers that ensure that they customers are satisfied and provide rain checks in these situations have superior service.

I find that some retailers are better at providing rain checks then others. For Instance Walmart indicates on their website that they will provide a rain check as long as the item is not a special purchase or bonus offer, however I have found whenever I ask they say no, but if you speak to the manager they will say yes. Canadian Tire or Shoppers Drug Mart, don't even bother asking ! I have found that they are difficult retailers when it comes to providing rain checks for sale items and they seem to be sold out of their Great sale items within 10 minutes of the sale starting.

Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, Sobeys and Pharma plus I would say have the best customer service when it comes to providing rain checks.

The usual length of time a rain check is good for is 30 days, which is normally more then enough time to get back to that store to purchase the item. Also, if you return to a store and they still do not have the item in stock, some retailers will extend the rain check to ensure that you are able to purchase the item. So it doesn't hurt to ask.

So keep you mind that you can ask for a raincheck

How to Stretch your dollar with a Turkey Dinner

We all know that making a large turkey for dinner can seem daunting, but it does not have to be.

You are usually able to find Turkeys on sale for .99 cents a pound around the holidays. Take advantage of those sales buy purchasing an extra turkey for your freezer. On a day when you have some extra time, throw the Turkey in the oven to Roast. You can make a traditional Turkey Dinner that night and then freeze the leftover Turkey for future meals. Here is what I always do, and I will share some of the recipes that I use.

I bought a 9 pound turkey for under $9. The day that I roast the Turkey I will make Mashed Potatoes, maybe some Stuffing and a vegetable.

After that Dinner I divide the Turkey into Freezer Bags in serving Size portions (1lb). I make 2 recipes for Dinner with the leftovers that are easy to make.

Turkey Tetrazzini (This is what I call this)

1 lb of left over Turkey from the freezer, defrosted .99
1/2 a brick of Low Fat Cream cheese .99 on sale
1 cup Frozen Peas .25
1 package of Mushrooms 1.49
1 package of Egg noodles 1.49
1 to 2 cups of Milk .50
1 tbsp Mr Dash Seasoning. .20
1 onion .10
1 tbsp butter .10

Cook the Egg Noodles according to the package directions.
Meanwhile, Chop the onion and saute with the butter for 1 to 2 minutes in a Large Saute Pan. Slice the mushrooms and add to the pan. Saute for 4 to 5 minutes. Add the Defrosted Frozen Peas the Mr Dash, the Cream cheese, turkey and 1 cup of milk. Cook until the Cream cheese is melted, and the rest of the ingredients are warm. Add more milk if needed. Add the cooked Egg Noodles and Stir to combine. Ensure everything is Hot, then enjoy !

Cost for this Dinner : $6.11


Turkey Noodle Casserole

1 Package of Egg Noodles 1.49
1 can of Cream of Mushroom Soup .49
1 pound of Turkey from the freezer defrosted .99
1 cup Frozen Mixed veggies, defrosted .25
1 cup of Mayonnaise .50
1 cup of milk .25
1 tbsp Poultry Seasoning .05

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Boil the Egg Noodles for 2 minutes. They will be undercooked. Combine all remaining ingredients in a large oven safe casserole. Add the Egg noodles and stir until well combined. Cover the casserole and Bake for 30 to 45 minutes until Hot and bubbly.

Cost of this Dinner: $4.02

and I still will have turkey leftover!

GLAD coupons found in stores

The Glad Coupons are out for this year. The coupon booklet includes recipes as well as a .75 cent coupon that can be used towards Gladware containers, Glad Bags and Glad wraps. The coupon is good until March 31, 2010.

Don't waste using this coupon on Glad Products when they are regular price. Glad Products always go on sale for .99 or 1.00. Use your coupon when they are on sale for this price and on pay .25 !

Save money if an item does not scan correctly

Stores participate in the Scanning Code of Practice, which means that if an item in their store scans incorrectly, you can either receive it for free (if the price is under $10) or receive $10 off the price of the item if the item is over $10.

Make sure you watch the register when the items are being scanned, as you would be amazed how much you can save by just making sure that items scan correctly!


The Scanner Price Accuracy Voluntary Code

The Scanner Price Accuracy Voluntary Code evolved from the collaborative efforts of the Retail Council of Canada, the Canadian Association of Chain Drug Stores, the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers and the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors. These associations are composed of national, regional and local retailers selling a wide assortment of general merchandise, as well as pharmaceutical and food products.


This Code, implemented in June 2002, applies to all scanned Universal Product Code (UPC), bar coded, and/or Price Look Up (PLU) merchandise sold in all participating stores, with the exception of goods such as prescription drugs which are not easily accessible to the public and price-ticketed items.


Purpose of the Code


The purpose of the Code is to:
• Visibly demonstrate retailer commitment to scanner price accuracy;
• Provide retailers with a consistent national framework for dealing with scanner price accuracy issues; and
• Provide the retail industry with a mechanism for consumer redress in scanner price accuracy cases, to be managed by a Scanner Price Accuracy Committee.
Here's how it works.

If the scanned price of a qualifying item at the checkout of a participating store is higher than the price displayed in the store - or advertised by the store - the lower price will be honoured. If the correct price of the product is $10 or less, the retailer will give the product to the customer for free. If the correct price of the product is higher than $10, the retailer will give the customer $10 off the corrected price. If multiple units of a given product are involved in a scanning error, the policy will be applied to the first unit only.
